How a Knee Walker Can Help You Stay Mobile
Osteoarthritis is a condition that affects millions of people across the UK, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. When it affects the foot or ankle, it can significantly limit your ability to move comfortably and confidently, especially during flare-ups or after surgery.
At StrideOn, we regularly hear from customers managing osteoarthritis who are looking for a more comfortable alternative to crutches or walking frames. For many, our knee walkers offer an ideal solution - whether you're recovering from a procedure, resting during a painful flare, or simply trying to maintain some independence.
Understanding Osteoarthritis in the Lower Limb
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that causes the cartilage in a joint to wear down over time. In the foot or ankle, this can lead to:
- Persistent pain that worsens with movement
- Swelling and stiffness, particularly in the morning or after sitting
- Reduced range of motion
- Difficulty standing or walking for extended periods
Treatment often includes rest, pain relief, physiotherapy, and sometimes surgical interventions such as ankle fusion or joint realignment. All of these require periods of reduced or non-weight bearing, which can be difficult to manage with crutches alone.
Why a Knee Walker Is a Smarter Alternative to Crutches
Whether you’re resting during an arthritic flare or recovering from foot/ankle surgery, staying mobile without causing more damage is key. That’s where a StrideOn knee walker comes in.
Here’s how our knee walkers can support your recovery and daily life:
1. Stay Active Without Pressure on the Affected Joint
Crutches can be tiring, and they put the burden of movement entirely on your upper body. Our knee walkers allow you to rest your affected foot or ankle on a comfortable padded knee platform and glide along using your good leg - no hopping, no shoulder strain.
2. Reduce Pain and Fatigue
Mobility aids should make life easier, not harder. Our customers often say they feel less exhausted and much more confident using a knee walker compared to crutches or Zimmer frames. The cushioned support and smooth motion help reduce discomfort while keeping you mobile.
3. Stay Independent at Home and Outdoors
From making a cup of tea to walking the dog, our knee walkers help you carry on with your usual activities. We offer two models:
- StrideOn Knee Walker – perfect for indoor use, especially where space is tight.
- Orthomate Knee Scooter – with air-filled tyres, ideal for outdoor terrain like pavements or park paths.
Both models come with a handy basket for carrying items and a parking brake so you can stop and safely use both hands.
What Our Customers Say
Many people managing osteoarthritis have found StrideOn to be a game-changer. One customer shared:
“If I could rate 10 stars I would. The customer service was 100% and just so friendly and accommodating. The product itself is a COMPLETE game changer for anyone who wants to keep mobile during a foot or ankle injury. I was able to carry on running a busy household and do some work while using the knee walker.”
Getting Started with a Knee Walker
If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in your foot or ankle and need a break from weight bearing, a knee walker can offer a more stable, comfortable, and practical way to stay mobile.
And if you’ve got a procedure booked, such as ankle fusion or toe realignment, consider hiring a knee walker a few days before surgery. That way, you can adjust the fit and practise getting around so you’re confident as soon as you get home.
